What is Assertiveness?

Assertiveness is an empowered communication style that allows you to clearly and confidently state how you want people to treat you.  It assists you in honouring your own needs and standing up for what is important to you . Being assertive also allows you to act in your own best interests ( instead of someone’s else’s best interests) and express your rights as a human being. It is also a sign of self respect and self care.

Assertive behaviour is a skill that can be used with friends, work colleagues, partners and even complete strangers.  It tells the world that you care about how you feel and you believe you are important and valuable.

Assertiveness Phrases

Having a few assertiveness phrases up your sleeve can be useful if you find yourself regularly saying Yes to other peoples requests when you really want to say No! We all do it, as often we think that if we say No other people they may disapprove of us or we will feel like we will cause unwanted conflict. Many of us struggle to be assertive so a few Assertive phrases are useful to practice so that you can use them in those common people pleasing moments!

Try a few of these assertive phrases

  1. Thank you for the offer, but that doesn’t interest me right now
  2. Thanks for asking but I can’t help right now.
  3. I would like to help but I can’t today
  4. Thanks but that isn’t a priority for me at the moment
  5. Thanks, but I have other plans – I hope you manage to get someone else to assist you.
  6. That doesn’t work for me right now.
  7. I will pass on this one
  8. I will think about it and get back to you
  9. I am not sure how I feel about that.  I will take some time to think about it and get back to you when I am ready
  10. Thanks for thinking of me, but I can’t make it
